A mysterious firmware update, firmware 2.42, has just gone live.
To be entirely honest, we have absolutely no idea what this firmware does. It's odd; usually Sony prompts everyone before these sort of updates occur, but this time nobody has received any prior notice.
Just go download it we suppose. We'll be updating this article momentarily as more specific details on this new update arise.
Update:
It appears that the Trophies have been optimized and are loading much quicker now.
Update #2
Official word from Sony: "This update improves the playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 and PlayStation format software."
Update #3
For those of you having difficulty downloading the new firmware update via the PS3, we have provided a link to download the update to your PC and transfer to your system. Click here to download firmware 2.42.

this update has screwed my ps3 over, all starting from 2.41 firmware. 2.4 was the best firmware id ever had cause well the XMB but overall it made warhawk not freeze anymore. man was i happy. everything was fine untill gay 2.41 was released. it was sopposed to help all the problems that i didnt have and the funny thing is, is that the problems that i didnt have, i did have after 2.41 and it started to freeze again. i was hoping this update would improve the stabability so warhawk wouldnt freeze again. but no it didnt it frooze 2 times in 1 hour around. then my bro was playing rockband and out of the blue frooze for rockband!!! warhawk was the only game that freezes and now rockband does. im really mad and the same as you fkps3 mine has also suffered slowness. well this is my problem soo i need to say that.

They would NOT release an COMPLETE firmware update for:
Official word from Sony: "This update improves the playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 and PlayStation format software."
I expect it contains some, if not all portions of Home.

Home is a separate download that even when you have downloaded, dynamically downloads and installs each "area" the first time you go to that area. It has little to nothing to do with the firmware except for maybe a minor API tweak here or there.
Home is too large to include inside of the firmware, and no reason to include it, just like Folding@Home, a separate program that only downloads if you choose to use it.

Fixed my bluray ... needed cleaning disc put in it. Probably a good idea to remind anyone with bluray problems to try this as a first solution ... which Sony didn't even suggest when I called them. Suprisingly!

ITs good to see Sony taking care of business, as they have a lot of catching up to do. I think its a good thing, but I will probably be forever frustrated at how horrible the PSN is. The store is great, but the PSN is just soooo slow. Yes, I'm comparing it to xbox live, but it shouldn't be slow and laggy. I have a 1gb fiber to the home connection. If Sony could make a service equal to xbox live, I would pay for it. The small annual fee is definately worth it.

Sony Customer Service never ceases to amaze me with its efficiency. I downloaded the update about on Monday, it immediately caused problems for me by not loading or acknowledging the presence of BD content in the disk tray. I emailed Sony, and with a swift reply I was given a reference and phone number. Rang the number, and was answered quickly by call centre standards, they talked me through it and we came to a solution. They will be delivering me a new console on Tuesday. I have to say that being a Sony obsessed nut like I am, this kind of service only strengthens my affections for a brand who are so clearly consumer focussed. I like 360s but I'd have my ps3 over one anyday...
